Over the 70 year period between the Whittle engine and the present day, the temperature capability of turbine blade alloys has increased by about 350 °C. The speaker will describe this remarkable development, from forged Nimonic alloys through to today's third and fourth generation nickel single crystals - and will speculate on what the future may hold.
